Kiosk number search

By default, the kiosk finds a student from either a name or a number. Some centers would rather lock it to numbers only — here's how, and what changes when you do.

Why go number-only

Every student already has a unique student number. Number-only mode is for centers that would rather students (or staff) not browse names at the kiosk at all — typing a name won't find anyone, but a number always will.

  1. 1

    Open Admin > Kiosk Search

On the Admin tab (manager-only), find the Kiosk Search card.

  2. 2

Turn on "Only allow check-in by student number"

Flip the toggle and click Save. This applies instantly, center-wide — no need to touch any device.

What changes at the kiosk

The search box's placeholder changes to "Scan or type your number…" as a reminder. Typing a name now finds nothing — only digits match a student, by their number.

Demo of typing a name at the kiosk and getting no results, then typing a student number and checking that student in, with number-only search turned on

Nothing about check-in or check-out itself changes — students (or staff) still tap a result and confirm, exactly as before. Only how they get found is different.

Using a barcode scanner (Beta)

This is still a work in progress. Right now it requires a physical USB or Bluetooth scanner — we're working on scanning straight from a tablet's camera, with no external hardware needed.

No setup needed, for now

Quick answers

Does this also affect the "Check in a student" box on the dashboard's Live Roster?

Yes — Live Roster's own check-in box uses the same search, so it's locked to numbers too whenever this is turned on. Live Roster's Filter by name box is unaffected; that's a separate, local filter over students already loaded.

Do students still need a student number for this to work?

Every student gets one automatically — you don't have to assign it. Find it any time from the Students tab, or on a printed ID card.

Can I turn this off again later?

Yes, any time — flip the toggle back and save. Nothing about your students or their numbers changes either way.

Does this require a special scanner?

No — any USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner that types like a keyboard works with no configuration.

Do I need to buy a barcode scanner to use number-only mode?

No — number-only mode works with typed numbers alone, no scanner required. A scanner just makes it faster. Scanning straight from a tablet's camera, with no external hardware, is on the way — barcode scanner support is Beta for now.
